Shoulder injury shelves Torrens for 2015

Yankees catching prospect to miss season with torn labrum
March 2, 2015

Luis Torrens will have to wait a little longer to get a second chance at full-season ball.

The Yankees No. 10 prospect will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder and is expected to miss the entire 2015 season, the Yankees announced Tuesday.

New York signed Torrens out of Venezuela for $1.3 million in 2012. After playing in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League in 2013, Torrens opened 2014 with Class A Charleston, but played just nine games in April before being removed from the RiverDogs' roster. He had a .154 average at the time. He returned to the GCL in June, then jumped to short-season Staten Island a week later.

The 18-year-old hit .270 with a .732 OPS at Staten Island and earned a spot on the New York-Penn League All-Star team. The backstop threw out 42 percent of attempted basestealers on the circuit and drew raves for his arm and defense.

"Torrens has a strong arm, and he already has developed the footwork and release to make the most of it," the Prospect Pipeline team wrote.
