Field of Eight Set for Oobe Home Run Derby

Batters take aim at the Green Monster at 6 PM on Tuesday
June 19, 2010
Eight batters, all of whom are amongst the best power hitters in the South Atlantic League, will square off prior to Tuesday's All-Star Game at Fluor Field in Oobe Home Run Derby.

The field of competition has been announced with four representatives of each division. With gates to Fluro Field opening at 5:30 PM, the Oobe Home Run Derby will begin at 6:00 PM.

Each batter will receive 10 outs, with the winner of each division advancing to the finals. The finals will actually be after the 2nd inning of the All-Star Game, as each finalist will represent a fan who has a chance to win $25,000, courtesy of BB&T.

From the Southern Division will be Chris Dominguez of the Augusta GreenJackets, Joe Sanders of the Asheville Tourists, Kody Hinze of the Lexington Legends, and Ronald Bermudez of the Greenville Drive.

For the Northern Division will be Ian Gac of the Kannapolis Intimidators, Aaron Baker of the West Virginia Power, Miguel Velazquez of the Hickory Crawdads, and Steven Souza of the Hagerstown Suns.

Entering the final two days of the first half of the 2010 regular season, Ian Gac leads the entire South Atlantic League with 13 home runs. In addition, the 2003 26th round selection of the Texas Rangers is 5th in the league in RBI, 2nd in Slugging Percentage, 2nd in Extra-Base Hits, 4th in Total Bases, and 2nd in HR/AB Ratio.

Also amongst the league leaders is the Legends' Kody Hinze, who currently ranks tied for 2nd with 12 round trippers. Selected as the Southern Division's starting first baseman, Hinze is tops in the league in RBI while also ranking 3rd in HR/AB Ratio. It's too bad that Hinze won't be facing any of the Drive's pitchers in the derby at Fluor Field, as he has 7 of his homers in 12 games against Greenville this season.

Tabbed as the starting third baseman for the Southern Division, Chris Dominguez of the GreenJackets is tied for 5th in the league with 10 home runs. A 3rd round selection of the Giants in 2009, Dominguez is the team leader in RBI, while placing 2nd in Hits and Slugging Percentage.

Also tied for 5th in the league with 10 home runs is the Northern Division's Miguel Velazquez, of the Hickory Crawdads. The starting centerfielder for the Northern Division, Velazquez also ranks amongst the league leaders in RBI and runs scored.

Tied for the team lead with 9 home runs, Asheville's Joe Sanders makes up the third participant for the Soutern Division. Having belted 7 homers on the year, the Power's Aaron Baker rounds out the Northern Division participants.

Making up the final Oobe Home Run Derby contestant, and representing the host Greenville Drive will be Ronald Bermudez. Bermudez is 2nd on the Drive with 5 homers, while leading the club in RBI, Hits, Doubles and Total Bases.
