Early offense lead to Storm triumph

The Eyes plate five in the first, go on to win 5-1
April 26, 2015

LAKE ELSINORE, CA - Early offense spurred the Lake Elsinore Storm to victory for the second time in as many games, as The Eyes quelled the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 5-1 at The Diamond Friday night.

Lake Elsinore put up all five of their runs in the first inning. Jose Rondon started things with a walk, then proceeded to swipe second base. Auston Bousfield laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Rondon to third, and Fernando Perez delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0.

Gabriel Quintana lofted a double over the centerfielder's head in the next at-bat, putting runners on second and third with one out. After Robert Kral walked to load the bases, Kyle Gaedele laced a single up the middle to plate Perez and put the Storm up 2-0.

With the bases still loaded, Marcus Davis was hit by a pitch that brought home the third Lake Elsinore score, and Yale Rosen made it 5-0 with a two RBI knock two batters later.

Staked to a 5-0 lead, Storm starter Zech Lemond allowed just one run over four innings of work. The former Rice University standout gave up two hits, walked four and struck out three.

Leading 5-1 in the fifth, the Lake Elsinore bullpen took over. Kyle Lloyd (W, 1-0) worked two scoreless innings to earn the victory, and Nick Mutz, Kyle Bartsch and Eric Yardley followed suit to secure the victory.

The Storm turned a season-high four double plays on defense, supporting a sterling effort from the entire pitching staff.

Lake Elsinore (7-10) will go for the series win over Rancho Cucamonga (10-7) tomorrow afternoon at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore. Ronald Herrera (1-1, 4.50 ERA) gets the start for the Storm while the Quakes will send Zach Bird (2-0, 3.60 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
