Report: Dahl to miss remainder of season

Colorado's No. 2 prospect David Dahl will reportedly miss the rest of the season after successful surgery to repair a lacerated spleen Thursday, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan.

Dahl was sent to the hospital to be examined and treated for that as well as a possible concussion and rib injury following a collision in the outfield during Double-A New Britain's game with Altoona on Thursday.

In the sixth inning of Thursday afternoon's contest, Curve right fielder Stetson Allie hit a shallow fly ball to center field. Dahl rushed in from center with shortstop Trevor Story and second baseman Juan Ciriaco closing in from the infield. Story turned off before the ball fell, but Ciriaco continued his path, leaping to avoid Dahl but instead striking the outfielder's head and torso area with his knee. Dahl stayed on the ground following the collision, but walked off under his own power before being replaced by Noel Cuevas.

Dahl's father later said that his 21-year-old son was in surgery after doctors reportedly "found bleeding," Passan tweeted.

"They're just trying to save [the spleen] now," Mike Dahl told AL.com. "He got hit in the face, the nose, the spleen, a bunch of different places, but that's the main thing right now. He probably has a minor concussion, I would imagine, because he doesn't remember much about what happened. No broken bones or nothing -- all the CT scans were negative."

Dahl expressed appreciation for well wishes late Thursday night on Twitter.

Dahl was in the midst of his first season at the Double-A level and owned a .269/.296/.379 line with three homers, three triples, seven doubles, 16 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 44 games with the Rock Cats. The outfielder had surged in May, batting .307/.320/.436 with two home runs, 11 RBIs and 17 runs scored in 25 games.

Passan later tweeted that the nature and severity of the injury could require Dahl to wear special protective gear for the remainder of his career.

It has not been an easy first four years in the Rockies system for the 2012 10th overall pick. A suspension for disciplinary reasons and torn hamstring limited him to only 10 games with Class A Asheville in 2013. He showed off his potential at the Class A and Class A Advanced levels last season, hitting .299/.335/.492 with 14 homers, eight triples, 41 doubles and 21 steals for Asheville and Modesto. That solid performance at the plate, along with what's considered plus speed and defense, helped Dahl climb to his current spot at No. 54 in MLB.com's ranking of prospects.

The Rock Cats defeated the Curve, 9-5, on Thursday. Catcher Jan Vazquez homered, tripled and drove in three runs for New Britain while Story added a solo homer. Willy Garcia went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs for Altoona.
