Cael Brockmeyer to join Pelicans from South Bend

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (JUNE 29, 2015) - The Chicago Cubs announced on Monday that Class-A South Bend Cubs catcher and first baseman Cael Brockmeyer (pronounced "Kale") has been promoted to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The slugger leaves South Bend as the team-leader in both homers and doubles. The move comes one day after Pelicans outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. and right-handed pitchers Tyler Skulina and Duane Underwood Jr. were placed on the 7-day disabled list.

In his third professional season, Brockmeyer, 23, comes to the Pelicans after batting .274 with a team-leading 16 doubles and five homers as well as a triple in 63 games with South Bend. Prior to the promotion, Brockmeyer also ranked second on the club in RBI (33) and was tied for the third most runs scored (31). A six-foot, five-inch native of San Diego, Calif., Brockmeyer has collected four hit-streaks of six games or more this season. The right-handed batter rode a seven-game streak from May 20‒May 26, and improved upon that with a career-best nine-game hit-streak from June 4‒June 14. In that stretch, he averaged .343 (12-for-35) at the plate with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs. Primarily a catcher, Brockmeyer has also played first base in 36 of 175 career games played, including 23 games this season. He began his professional career with the Boise Hawks in June of 2013 and also played two games with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in August of that season. In 2014, Brockmeyer played 77 regular season games for the Midwest League Champion Kane County Cougars and was the starting catcher in all seven of that club's postseason victories. The Cubs selected Brockmeyer in the sixteenth round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft out of California State University, Bakersfield.

Brockmeyer was also named the starting catcher for the 2015 Midwest League All-Star Game on June 23. Along with his All-Star nod, he was named the Midwest League Player of the Week on for the week of April 13‒April 19, 2015.

With the roster move, the Pelicans' roster is at 25 active players, the Carolina League limit, and includes seven players on the disabled list.

The Pelicans continue their three-game series against the Winston-Salem Dash on Monday. The first pitch from BB&T Ballpark is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
