Wiest And Company Lead Asheville To 2-1 Win

July 1, 2015

ASHEVILLE, NC-- Grahamm Wiest made his fifth start of the season for the Asheville Tourists on Wednesday night. Like three of his previous four starts, the Tourists right-handed pitcher lasted exactly six innings and gave Asheville a chance to win. Wiest was picked up by a trio of relievers in an eventual 2-1 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs.

Despite the lack of run production from both teams, the ballgame was interesting throughout. The RiverDogs managed a run off Wiest in the top of the second inning but the Tourists answered with one in the third. Drew Weeks hit a sacrifice fly into deep centerfield plating Luis Jean. It was Weeks' team-leading 43rd RBI of the year.

The game remained tied 1-1 as both teams had struggled to sustain a rally. In the bottom of the sixth, Asheville had runners at second and third with two outs. Omar Carrizales came to the plate and hit a ground ball single through the right side of the infield. Dom Nunez scored the go-ahead run while Jairo Rosario was thrown out attempting to score from second. It was one of three outfield assists for Charleston's Alexander Palma.

Jerry Vasto was the first reliever Asheville called upon and the All-Star lefty worked a one, two, three inning. Jerad McCrummen ran into trouble in the eighth but worked his way out of the jam. Charleston had runners at second and third with no outs. A strikeout, a walk, a pop out, and a groundout left the RiverDogs without a run.

Josh Michalec pitched a scoreless ninth for his league leading 16th save of the season. Rosario and Shane Hoelscher each had two hits for the Tourists while Jean extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Game three of the Tourists current four-game homestand will be on Thursday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
