Wings lefty Taylor Rogers was making his first start since being named to the International League All-Star Team on Thursday, and had to work around some first inning trouble Sunday: a single, and an infield single, put runners at first and third with two out. Rogers struck out Cord Phelps to strand the runners and end the threat.
Veteran right-hander Berken had a much easier first inning Sunday, setting down the side in order although Oswaldo Arcia sent right fielder Jordan Danks to the warning track for the final out of the inning.
Rogers found himself in trouble again in the third inning, after an error by Arcia in the outfield and a double by Chase d'Arnaud landed runners on second and third with no outs. Tyler Henson hit another double for the IronPigs to score the two base runners, putting the Wings down 2-0. Two batters later, Russ Canzler knocked a base hit to score Henson. The Wings were able to regroup, as Rogers struck out Phelps for the second time in the afternoon, and Carlos Paulino threw out Canzler on the attempted steal to end the inning.
The Wings were able to notch their first hit of the afternoon in the third inning, as Paulino knocked a two-out base. First is where Paulino stayed, however, as Jorge Polanco flied out to center to end the inning.
The sixth inning saw the Wings' first scoring threat of the game when Jorge Polanco hit a one-out double. Polanco advanced to third on a James Beresford ground out. With two outs, Arcia got on base after being hit by a Berken pitch, and the next batter, Reynaldo Rodriguez, walked to load the bases with two outs. All three runners were stranded as Danny Ortiz flied out to center field after a long battle at the plate.
d'Arnaud homered off Rogers with one out in the seventh inning, ending Rogers' time on the mound with Mark Hamburger taking over.
Rogers (7-5) worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed nine hits and four runs (three earned). Rogers didn't walk a batter, struck out six, and threw 95 pitches - 65 for strikes.
Berken (5-5) took the mound in the bottom of the seventh having allowed just two hits and two walks on 72 pitches. Wilkin Ramirez hit a one-out single, but a double play ended the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Berken allowed a lead-off single to Arcia, which extended Arcia's hitting streak to seven games. With two outs, Martinez hit a two-run homer into the IronPigs bullpen to pull the Wings to within two runs at 4-2. Dustin McGowan replaced Berken, and got a flyout from Ramirez to end the game.
Berken pitched 8 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and two runs, with two walks and two strikeouts. Berken threw 104 pitches, 69 for strikes.
Caleb Thielbar pitched the ninth inning for Rochester.
