Bulls Bombed In Charlotte, 17-6

Knights Slug Pair Of Grand Slams In Series Opener

Charlotte, NC --- The Charlotte Knights hit two grand slams while Durham committed seven errors en route to a 17-6 win over the Bulls in the series opener at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday night.

The second-place Knights (49-37) scored in every inning but the sixth, forcing eight Durham (44-41) pitchers to throw 222 pitches in the defeat. Two of Durham's pitchers were position players Vince Belnome and JP Arencibia, who combined to pitch the eighth.

Trailing 6-0 entering the fifth, Luke Maile drilled a two-run homer, his fourth of the season and second against the Knights. Corey Brown and Nick Franklin each hit two-run homers in the eighth.

Jose Dominguez (L, 0-2) suffered the loss, allowing one run in the first inning, his only inning of the emergency start. 

Jason Coats swatted a grand slam in the fifth inning off of Ernesto Frieri to jump the lead to 10-2. Then in the eighth, Chris Marrero took out Arencibia to deep left field for Charlotte's second grand slam.

Junior Guerra (W, 1-3) worked five innings, fanning a season-high nine batters to earn the victory.

The series continues into the middle game Wednesday night at 7:05 PM ET with Robert Zarate (1-0, 0.69) starting against Brad Penny (4-3, 3.98).
