Marlins' Llera suspended 60 games

Catching prospect banned following positive test for Stanozolol
December 2, 2015

NEW YORK -- Marlins catching prospect Robert Llera was suspended for 60 games on Wednesday after testing positive for a banned steroid.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said Llera received a 60-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol, which is listed as a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension of Llera, who is currently on the roster of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Marlins, will be effective at the start of the 2016 GCL season in June.

Llera was selected by the White Sox in the 47th round of the 2011 Draft but did not make his Minor League debut until this year with the Marlins. In 14 games, the right-handed hitter batted .250 with a double, two RBIs and a stolen base. The 22-year-old went 9-for-36 with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

Stanozolol is a synthetic anabolic steroid derived from testosterone that is sometimes prescribed by veterinarians to encourage muscle growth, red blood cell production, bone density and to stimulate the appetite of weakened animals.

Llera's suspension was the 100th handed out by Major League Baseball this year for violations of the Minor League drug program.
