Attention turns to the high school ranks

As the Draft Report moves to Week Four of its look at the top amateur baseball prospects the draft class of 2007 has to offer, it's time to make a self-correction of sorts.

To this point, the Report has been very college heavy. Of the 33 in-depth reports filed thus far, only nine detailed the skills of prep stars. Part of that was unavoidable, of course, with the college season getting underway before the high school schedule kicked off.

Let this week's Report, then, even things up a bit. High school action is really starting to heat up and it's beginning to look like the real depth in talent in this year's class will be from the prep ranks. The college game won't be ignored completely -- there's one full report on a college lefty who could be on the rise, and several other college players are mentioned below in the notes.

But, for the most part, the Report went south, to Florida, Alabama and Louisiana, for some very interesting high school names you should know.

Austin Bailey, RHP, Prattville HS, Ala.: Bailey flashed a good fastball and an above-average curve over the weekend. Complete Report.

Ross Detwiler, LHP, Missouri State: The Bears' Friday night starter was stunning in his debut, going seven innings, allowing just two hits, one run and one walk while striking out 13 against Dallas Baptist. Complete Report.

John Gast, LHP, Lake Brantley HS, Altamonte Springs, Fla.: Strong lefty continued to show he's one of the more advanced high school arms in the draft class. Complete Report.

Brandon Hamilton, RHP, Stanhope Elmore HS, Millbrook, Ala: The right-hander did not throw the ball well in his last outing and appeared to back down when things got tight. Complete Report.

Chad Jones, OF, Southern Lab, Baton Rouge, La.: A top football recruit signed to go to LSU, Jones showed off some tremendous baseball tools, particularly his power. Complete Report.

Will Middlebrooks, RHP/SS, Liberty-Eylau HS, Texarkana, Texas: The two-sport, two-way star showed some impressive skills on the mound and at the plate at a tournament his school hosted. Complete Report

Other draft notes: High school right-hander Erik Goeddel (Bellarmine Prep, San Jose, Calif.) will miss at least a month with a partial tear of the collateral ligament in his right elbow. ... J.P. Arencibia, Tennessee catcher, missed the weekend series because of a strained back muscle. ... His teammate, lefty starter James Adkins, continued his fine season by going eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out 12. He's got a 1.50 ERA and .195 batting average against over four starts. ... NC State right-hander Andrew Brackman was electric on Friday night, carrying his stuff -- including a fastball that ran up to 99 mph -- into the eighth inning. ... San Francisco lefty Aaron Poreda, featured here last week, gave up an infield single to start his game on Friday, then didn't allow another baserunner through eight innings of work. He didn't give up a single walk an d struck out seven. ... Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters showed signs of shaking off his early-season funk by going 7-for-14 over the weekend. With two more hits on Tuesday, he's got his average up to .333 now. ... Oklahoma State 3B Matt Mangini went 4-for-13 with a pair of homers and 6 RBIs at Cal State Northridge over the weekend. Over 10 games, he's hitting .419 and slugging .721 with 13 RBIs.
