Suns fall to M-Braves 2-1 in Rain-Shortened Game

Perez goes 3-for-3 at the plate
June 27, 2016

PEARL, Miss. - The Jacksonville Suns (2-3, 32-43) fell to the Mississippi Braves (3-2, 37-37) by a 2-1 score in a rain-shortened fifth game of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Monday night.

After Mississippi took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a Carlos Franco 2-run single, a thunderstorm developed and the tarp was put on the field going into the top of the seventh before the game was called due to inclement weather after a one hour, 24 minute delay.

Suns starter Jake Esch (7-6) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts in his five and two-third innings. Braves starter Sean Newcomb (4-4) earned the win by working all six innings for Mississippi, allowing a run on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Jacksonville scored the game's first run in the top of the third. On a Yefri Perez single, there was a throwing error by Carlos Franco that scored Cam Maron to put the Suns ahead 1-0. Jacksonville held ontp that lead until Franco's two-run single in the sixth off Esch that was the difference in the game.

The win gives the Braves a series victory, and the Suns are now 1-2 in rubber match games against Mississippi this year.

The Suns will bus home to Jacksonville through the night, and after an off day Tuesday, the Suns will start a five-game home series against the Tennessee Smokies at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. The Suns will start right-hander Hunter Adkins (1-1, 5.91) while Tennessee will start right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng (3-3, 2.98 ERA).
