Tides Edge Bulls In Series Opener, 5-4

Durham's Rally Falls Short; Remains 2 Back In South
June 30, 2016

Norfolk, VA --- After spotting Norfolk a 5-0 lead, Durham's rally fell a run short in dropping the series opener at Harbor Park 5-4 on Thursday night.

The Tides (31-50) scored twice in the second and third against starter Justin Marks (L, 2-7) and added another in the fifth before Durham (36-46) began its comeback.

Richie Shaffer doubled home Eury Perez with two outs in the sixth, then the Bulls posted a big seventh. Johnny Field doubled with one out and scored on a double by Juniel Querecuto to make it 5-2. Following a pair of walks, Daniel Robertson looped a single into right for a run, with Jake Goebbert chipping in a sac fly to trim the deficit to 5-4. Shaffer grounded out to end the frame.

However, Pedro Beato and Jason Stoffel (S, 2) did not allow a runner in the final two innings to preserve the Tides' win.

Marks allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings and 106 pitches to take the loss.

The Bulls shuffled from second to third place with the defeat, but remained two games behind the Charlotte Knights.

The series continues Friday night with Jacob Faria (0-0, 0.00) making his second Triple-A start against former Bulls pitcher Andy Oliver (0-1, 3.05) at 7:05 PM ET.
