Syracuse scores five times in sixth, three times in seventh
July 4, 2016

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls fell to the Syracuse Chiefs 9-2 Monday night at the DBAP in front of a paid attendance of 11,688, the third largest crowd in DBAP history.

Trailing by a run in the top of the sixth, Syracuse erupted for five runs in the frame. A leadoff single was followed by three straight walks to make it a 2-2 ballgame, before Matt den Dekker blasted a grand slam into the right field seats as the visitors jumped ahead by four. The Chiefs increased their lead in the seventh, scoring three times behind four hits and two walks for a 9-2 advantage.

Syracuse (38-46) plated the game's first run in the top of the fifth on a solo homer by Caleb Ramsey. The Bulls (37-49) came right back in the bottom of the frame though, as Jake Goebbert's double scored Richie Shaffer, and Juniel Querecuto's two-out double scored Goebbert to put the home side in front 2-1.

Jaron Long (1-2)) picked up the win by tossing seven innings of two-run ball, striking out seven and allowing just two hits. Durham starter Jaime Schultz allowed one run on four hits in five innings for a no-decision, while Mark Sappington (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three walks and a hit without recording an out.

The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., when the Bulls send LHP Justin Marks (2-7, 4.66) to the mound opposite RHP Reynaldo Lopez (0-0, 1.50) for the Chiefs.
