Shuckers stop Suns, 3-0; rain postpones Game 2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Biloxi Shuckers right-hander Taylor Jungmann pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings to help the visitors to a 3-0, seven-inning win over the Jacksonville Suns, before rain postponed the second half of a scheduled doubleheader in front of 2,455 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Tuesday night.

The second game of Tuesday's doubleheader is scheduled to be made up as part of a doubleheader of seven-inning games beginning at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday, with gates opening at 10:30 a.m. Regular individual tickets for Tuesday's game may be exchanged at the box office for a ticket of equal or lesser value to any remaining regular season home game.

Fans holding tickets for Wednesday, Aug. 3, are welcome to attend both games of Wednesday's doubleheader. Group picnics will remain at their scheduled times.

Tuesday's game was scoreless until the top of the second inning, when Shuckers third baseman Tom Belza and second baseman Javier Betancourt hit consecutive two-out singles against Suns right-hander Patrick Johnson (6-6). Catcher Dustin Houle then singled to center field, scoring Belza. Betancourt took third base, and center fielder Alex Glenn's errant throw past third base allowed Betancourt to score, giving Biloxi a 2-0 lead. The Shuckers (14-23 second half, 53-53 overall) added a run in the fourth inning, as first baseman Dustin DeMuth singled to right field, and shortstop Gabriel Noriega singled to left-center field, sending DeMuth to third base. Betancourt hit a sacrifice fly to left field, but Noriega was retired at second base. Johnson lasted five innings, allowed three runs - two earned - on eight hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Right-handers Tayron Guerrero and Tyler Higgins each pitched scoreless innings for the Suns (17-20, 47-60).

Jungmann (1-2) escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the third inning. He did not allow another runner past second base until the seventh inning, when he allowed a walk, single and walk to load the bases with one out. Right-hander Stephen Kohlscheen entered to strike out left fielder Ronnie Mitchell and second baseman Peter Mooney for his 15th save.

UP NEXT: The Suns continue their series with Biloxi in a doubleheader of seven-inning games at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. for a Business Person Special start time and City of Jacksonville and Duval County Employee Appreciation Day, when city and county employees, as well as active military and veterans, may purchase $1 general admission or $5 reserved tickets by showing an ID at the box office. The weekly Underwood's Date Day package of a pair of tickets, two hot dogs, two drinks and popcorn is $20. Wednesday is also a Bark in the Park day, when dogs get in free to the ballpark with a paying human companion.
