Several openers snowed out
A foot of the white stuff fell at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine, causing the postponement of the Sea Dogs' 2007 opener against the Connecticut Defenders.
Weather and field conditions permitting, the two teams will attempt to begin the 2007 season at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, April 6, at Hadlock Field. No make-up date as been announced for Thursday's postponed game.
It's the third time in franchise history that the Sea Dogs -- champions of the Double-A Eastern League last season -- have been forced to postpone Opening Day due to snow.
The Sea Dogs' EL rivals in New Hampshire also postponed their home opener as well due to snow. The Fisher Cats and New Britain Rock Cats will instead open their seasons at 6:35 p.m. ET on Friday at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Snow and freezing temperatures also caused the postponement of Buffalo's home opener against the Richmond Braves in the Triple-A International League.
The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, April 6 at Dunn Tire Park.
Snow was also in the forecast in Lansing, Mich., where the Lugnuts and Fort Wayne Wizards were scheduled to play Thursday evening.
The Midwest League opener for both clubs was postponed and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday.
Other postponed games Thursday include: Corpus Christi at Wichita (Texas League); San Antonio at Tulsa (Texas League) Altoona at Erie (Eastern League); Binghamton at Akron (Eastern League); and Cedar Rapids at Beloit (Midwest League).
