High school stars focus on playoffs, draft

Draft Report highlights 10 more prep standouts
May 24, 2007

The Draft Report is regressing this week.

Last week, we hit the college scene hard. This time around, the Draft Report is dialing it back a few more years, to high school.

It's all prep, all the time, with another 10 names to break down as we are now less than two weeks away from the big day.

With college conference tournaments underway and high school playoffs in full swing out in California, there are plenty of news and notes to discuss, and not enough space here to get into them in any detail. So we'll sum it up like this:

Ross Detwiler bad (he had some kind of blister problem); Nick Schimdt good (no-no into the eighth); James Adkins good (no-no into the eighth -- that's not a misprint); Mike Moustakas good (two homers for Chatsworth High in the playoffs); Daniel Moskos pretty impressive (pitched into the eighth, only one walk -- and only two strikeouts). For more details, check out the old draft blog which includes first-hand reports on Schimdt and Adkins from the SEC Tournament.

Now onto this week's slew of reports:

Drew Cumberland, SS, Pace HS, Milton, FL: The speedy infielder may not be able to stay at shortstop, but that won't stop teams from being interested in his leadoff hitter potential. Complete Report.

Jon Gilmore, 3B, City HS, Iowa City, IA: The Iowan infielder showed well at the Perfect Game Showcase last week, impressing with a better approach at the plate and projectable power. Complete Report.

Justin Grimm, RHP, Virginia HS, Bristol, VA: Grimm is a projectable right-hander who has jumped on the map thanks to a fastball that has consistently been in the low 90s this season. Complete Report.

Angel Morales, OF, Puerto Rico Baseball Academy: While there are questions about his hitting ability, there's no doubt Morales can run and can flat-out catch the ball in center field. Complete Report.

Hunter Morris, OF, Grissom HS, Huntsville, AL: Those interested in Morris are drawn to his outstanding raw power from the left side of the plate. Complete Report.

Kevin Patterson, 1B, Oak Mountain HS, Birmingham, AL: Patterson impressed early in the season with his plus power before suffering a broken bone in his hand. He's healthy now, but might not be the easiest guy to sign. Complete Report.

Anthony Ranaudo, RHP, Saint Rose HS, Ocean Twp, NJ: A relatively raw pitcher, Ranaudo offers a strong arm with a good fastball and tons of projection in a big body. Complete Report.

Ben Revere, OF, Lexington Catholic HS, KY: Revere is as speedy as anyone in the draft. It's just a question of how much he'll hit. Complete Report.

Nefi Soto, SS, Colegio Maristas HS, PR: A shortstop now, most likely a third baseman in the future, Soto has an intriguing set of offensive tools -- speed and power -- that should play well at the hot corner. Complete Report.

Nathan Vineyard, LHP, Woodland HS, Emerson, GA: That's right, another high school lefty. This one is pretty polished with the chance of having a good three-pitch mix. Complete Report.
