Mysterious Box Arrives at Dow Diamond

February 8, 2012

MIDLAND, MI - What began as an ordinary day for the Great Lakes Loons front office staff turned into a puzzling one when a large box from an international shipping company arrived at Dow Diamond on Wednesday afternoon.

The box was first delivered to the Loon Loft at Dow Diamond, which is currently stocking its shelves in preparations for its February 23 opening, when the new 2012 Loons merchandise will first be for sale.

"I see a lot of boxes delivered to the store during the offseason, but this one was different," Assistant GM of Retail Operations and Guest Services, Ann Craig said. "I knew it wasn't one of my retail orders, so I started asking around the office."

The large wooden crate takes the strength of three grown men to carry and is identified only by its exterior markings that read 'Fragile' and 'Keep Hands Clear'. In addition, the box came with very strict instructions not to open until Monday, April 9, which is the Loons first home game of the 2012 season.

"We weren't expecting any large shipments from overseas, so this comes as a surprise," Paul Barbeau, Loons President and General Manager, said. "We're all very curious as to what's inside, but we're going to stick to the package instructions and wait to open it on Opening Day with our fans."

In the meantime, the Loons are seeking information. If anyone has any information regarding the box's contents or its original owner, please contact the Great Lakes Loons at 989-837-BALL. A video of the box is available on Loons.com for sleuthing.

The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. The Loons ticket staff is currently taking orders for ticket packages and group outings for 2012. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
