Rocket Wheeler to Throw First Pitch at Home Opener

March 15, 2012
The Rome Braves announce that former field manager Rocket Wheeler will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the home opener on April 12th. The 2012 season marks the tenth season of Rome Braves baseball.

"What an honor to be asked to throw out the first pitch to commemorate the tenth anniversary and to celebrate ten years of success of Braves baseball in Rome," says Wheeler. "It all started with the 2003 South Atlantic League championship and that is still very special to me."

Wheeler managed the Rome club for three seasons including its inaugural year in 2003. That season saw the team win the South Atlantic League championship and featured players such as Atlanta catcher Brian McCann and Kansas City's Jeff Francoeur. After managing in Rome, Wheeler spent time in Myrtle Beach and Mississippi and now is the manager of the Gulf Coast League Braves.

"This is an exciting part of our ten year celebration," says Rome General Manager Michael Dunn. "There will be plenty more exciting things to come!"

The home opener on Thursday April 12th will be against the Charleston River Dogs at State Mutual Stadium. For tickets call 706-378-5144.
