'Tees edged by Cubs, 2-1

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees lost their fifth game in row as they were defeated by the Daytona Cubs, 2-1 on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. After a 5-1 start to the season, the 'Tees have gone 9-21 since.

Manatees starting pitcher and Brewers 2011 first round draft pick Jed Bradley (4-3, 3.53) went just 3 1/3 innings as he left the game with an apparent groin injury. He allowed two runs on three hits, while walking two and not recording a strikeout.

The two runs scored on Bradley in the first inning were all that the Cubs needed as Nelson Perez hit a two-run single with one out in the frame. The Manatees (14-22) got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Cody Hawn plated Reggie Keen with a RBI single.

The scoring by both teams in the first inning would be all for the game as pitching dominated the rest of the way. After Bradley's early exit, Brevard County's bullpen held Daytona (14-23) scoreless for 5 2/3 innings.

Brian Garman came out of the pen first for the 'Tees and threw 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four. Eric Arnett, Stosh Wawrzasek and Eric Marzec threw a scoreless inning each against the Cubs.

The Manatees had their chances offensively as they outhit the Cubs 7-5, but Brevard went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Both Hawn and Mike Walker had two hits each in the Manatees' loss. During their current five game losing streak, Brevard County has scored just eight runs and is hitting just .192 as a team.

Brevard County and Daytona will be back in action on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. for the second game of this three-game set.

Brooks Hall (0-1, 1.98) will get the start for the Manatees as he replaces the recently promoted Hiram Burgos in the rotation. In his first start of the season last Thursday against Palm Beach, he went five innings and allowed one run, while striking out five.

The Cubs will send Matt Loosen (1-1, 5.54) to the hill. Loosen faced the 'Tees on opening night and allowed three runs on one hit and four walks in 1/3 of an inning.
