Segedin's Triple Gives Thunder Split In Reading

September 6, 2012
(Reading, PA) - Rob Segedin's two-out, three-run triple in the top of the ninth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and gave the Trenton Thunder a 4-1 win over the Reading Phillies in game two of the best-of-five ELDS series Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. Trenton's bullpen shut out the Phillies for the final eight innings on only two hits as the Thunder come home for game three Friday night with the series even at one win apiece.

Segedin's hit came against reliever Colby Shreve and scored Zoilo Almonte, Addison Marusazk and Kevin Mahoney. With one out in the ninth Almonte drew a walk and Maruszak followed with a single to right. Shreve threw a wild pitch to advance each runner, but J.R. Murphy struck out for the second out in the inning.

Reading decided to intentionally walk Mahoney after Shreve fell behind him 2-0 and face Segedin, who hit a 0-1 pitch off the end of the bat down the right field line. The Phillies right fielder Leandro Castro made a diving attempt to catch the ball but it eluded his reach and rolled behind him to clear the bases.

Shaeffer Hall, who entered in relief of MLB-rehabbing David Aardsma in the second inning, tossed 5.2 scoreless relief innings and allowed only one hit. Branden Pinder (1-0) retired league MVP Darin Ruf Ryan, the only batter he faced, to end the eighth inning with a runner on base. Pope pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record the save.

Aardsma allowed the lone Reading run and also three hits in his one inning of work. The right-hander, who has not pitched in the majors since 2010, threw 28 pitches and is expected to remain with the Thunder as they return to Waterfront Park for game three Friday night.

Marusazk's solo home run tied the score in the fifth inning against Reading starter Trevor May. May allowed one run and three hits in 5.1 strong innings. Maruszak collected two of the Thunder's five hits while Jake Fox had a pair of the Phillies' five hits.

Trenton and Reading continue the series with game three tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The Thunder will throw righty Mikey O'Brien (5-7, 4.20) while the Phillies are expected to start righty Ethan Martin (5-0, 3.18).
