Suns Announce Essay Contest
JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Jacksonville Suns are proud to announce that in conjunction with Duval County Public Schools, they will be holding an essay contest for 4th, 8th and 10th grade students. All students are encouraged to write a 300-500 word essay on their favorite hero and why. Essay will be due to each students' teacher by February 15, 2013.
Each school will select one entry to represent their school and submit it to the Jacksonville Suns. The Suns will then select a winner from each age group. Prizes will be awarded to each of the three winners including a personalized Suns jersey and $50 gift card to the 4th grade winner, a personalized Suns jersey and $75 gift card to the 8th grade winner and a one thousand dollar college scholarship, personalized Suns jersey and $100 gift card to the 10th grade winner. All three winners will also be recognized on Bragan Field before a Suns game during the 2013 season.
Suns Owner and President Peter D. Bragan Jr. has long been an advocate for reading in Duval County Public Schools. Since the late 80's he has personally visited quite a few elementary schools with his Casey's Challenge that encourages students to memorize the famous baseball poem Casey at the Bat for a special prize. In addition, the Suns will host three Celebration of Reading Days where schools are encouraged to take a fieldtrip to the ballpark for a fun-filled day at a Suns game. Duval County Media Specialists will also be honored for their contributions and accomplishments prior to a Suns game in 2013.
Peter D. Bragan Jr stated, "We are proud to partner with Duval County Public Schools and hopefully this program will help students as they prepare to take the FCAT writing test later in February." Duval County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Nikolai Vitti stated, "We are excited to be partnering with the Jacksonville Suns in promoting our students' literacy; and we deeply appreciate Mr. Bragan's generous sponsorship of an annual scholarship for our students. Partnerships like these will take our school system from good to great."
