Wong, Peterson lead Memphis in rout

Wednesday was just another night at the office for Kolten Wong.

The Cardinals' No. 3 prospect was 4-for-5 and scored a career-high four times as Memphis pounded Salt Lake, 17-6, on Wednesday. First baseman Brock Peterson plated six runs in the rout.

Wong started quickly, opening the game with an RBI triple and scoring on Ryan Jackson's single as the Redbirds posted a six-spot in the first inning. After popping out in the second, the 22-year-old second baseman doubled and scored in the third. Two frames later, Wong smacked his second two-bagger and crossed home on a single by Peterson.

He then walked and scored on Peterson's two-run homer in the seventh before singling in the ninth to cap his big night.

"Just one of those nights where I got a lot of good pitches to hit and put some good swings on it and found some holes," Wong said. "Just one of those productive nights for me."

Wong's performance extended his hitting streak to eight games, six of which have been multi-hit contests. He was happier about setting a personal best with the four runs scored.

"That's one of those things that I try to get every game is to make sure I can get on base a lot so the guys behind me can bring me in," he said. "Luckily for me, tonight everyone was hitting."

The Hawaii native has enjoyed a strong May, batting .389 with a 1.102 OPS for the Redbirds. He's provided a dynamic presence at the top of the lineup, scoring 19 runs in 16 games this month.

"Just getting into the season, I had the first month where I was kind of building up," said Wong, who previously scored three times in a game on April 8. "This month, I'm starting, I guess, to find my stride in Triple-A and starting to figure out some things here and there and constantly working to be able to be in the big leagues if I get that call soon.

"For me, every day I try to work on every aspect of my game. Hitting-wise, I've been trying to be more selective, but also to be able to try to stay with that line-drive approach and get on base. At the next level, my job is going to be to get on base."

Overall, Wong is batting .331 with 18 extra-base hits and 30 runs scored for the Redbirds. He's racked up 84 total bases and is 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts. He's also commited just one error at second this season, and that one occurred Wednesday night.

Peterson homered twice out of the cleanup spot for Memphis.

"It was awesome," Wong said. "Petey is one of our good hitters. That's a broad thing to say because our whole team is full of guys that can swing the bat well. Tonight it was Peterson, he put a lot of good swings on balls. He showed what kind of hitter he is and what kind of power he possesses."

Ryan Jackson plated three runs and veteran catcher J.R. Towles went yard for the Redbirds.

Scott McGregor allowed two runs on four hits over six innings to earn the win in his Triple-A debut. He struck out four and walked two.
