June 24, 2013

NILES, OH - The Doubledays (4-4) received a strong start from Robert Orlan to win 2-1 against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (3-5).

Orlan (0-0) retired the first eight batters he faced as he finished the night with a career high five strikeouts. The Virginia native tossed five innings, only allowing two hits and one walk. He received help early as Isaac Ballou led the game off with a double and was later driven in with an RBI single by Jordan Poole.

The next two innings the Doubledays faced two major league pitchers. Brett Myers and Blake Wood made rehab appearances for the Scrappers. Myers threw a perfect second inning, while Wood pitched the third and allowed a pair of hits.

Todd Simko (2-0) entered the game in the sixth inning when the Scrappers got their only run of the night. Juan Romero led the inning off with a double. Robel Garcia hammered a single that later scored Romero to tie the game at 1-1. Simko settled down and finished the night with three strikeouts.

The Doubledays regained the lead in the seventh inning when Jimmy Yezzo singled to start the inning. With one out and Yezzo on second base, Jean Valdez slapped a single to give the Doubledays the lead.

David Napoli threw a scoreless eighth and L.J. Hollins picked up his second save of the season with a perfect ninth. The rubber match will be tomorrow night at 7:05. Deion Williams is slated to make his second start of the season.
