Conley, Canha Spur Suns to 3-0 Win

Jacksonville starts ten-game home stand with victory
July 28, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Adam Conley tossed six scoreless innings and Mark Canha added a two-run double to his recent barrage of base hits as the Jacksonville Suns beat the Chattanooga Lookouts 3-0 in the opener of a five-game series at Bragan Field.

Conley's six strong frames extended his streak of not allowing an earned run to 22 innings. The left-hander struck out six and did not walk any batters in earning his team-leading tenth win of the season. Despite allowing eight hits, Conley kept the Lookouts off the scoreboard by escaping several jams.

"He battled his tail off," Suns manager Andy Barkett said following the victory. "He was in trouble every inning, it seemed like. He made pitches to get out of it. He showed me something tonight."

The Suns staked their southpaw to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Canha, batting over .500 during his last ten games, laced a two-run double down the left field line off Lookouts starter Andres Santiago (3-10) to give Jacksonville a 2-0 lead. It would turn out to be the only hit the Suns needed.

"[Canha]'s been swinging at hot bat for us," Barkett said. "He's making a lot of good contact lately."

They got one more, however, in the bottom of the fourth thanks to some shaky defense from Chattanooga. Michael Main doubled with one out to give Jacksonville a runner in scoring position, setting up a bunt situation for Conley. The pitcher laid down a bunt, but Lookouts catcher Jan Vazquez made a poor throw to first that bounced down the right field line. Main scored from second to extend Jacksonville's lead to 3-0.

Collin Cargill pitched two scoreless and hitless frames in relief of Conley, and Arquimedes Caminero tossed a perfect ninth inning for his third save.

The win gave the Suns a game and a half lead over Mobile and Mississippi in the Southern League South division.

Game two of the five-game series is scheduled for Monday evening, featuring Suns starter Matt Neil (1-2, 3.95) against Lookouts right-hander Duke von Schamann (2-3, 3.42). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET.
