Tulsa Trio Helps North To 2-1 Win

July 1, 2009
The Texas League All-Star Game Wednesday at Frisco's Dr Pepper Ballpark was a low-scoring affair, and the trio of Tulsa Drillers pitchers was prominently involved. Esmil Rogers, Jhoulys Chacin and Andrew Johnston each threw a scoreless inning as their North Division squad defeated the South Division 2-1.

Rogers worked a perfect fourth inning, while Chacin allowed one hit during a scoreless fifth inning. Johnston, the Texas League saves leader, pitched a scoreless ninth to complete the victory.

Tulsa first baseman Jeff Kindel played the entire game for the North and finished 0-4. Teammate Daniel Mayora was the starting shortstop and was hitless in two at-bats.

The North scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. Singles by Corey Smith, Hank Conger and Tyler Henley off Jason Fernandez loaded the bases. Fernandez then hit Mark Trumbo with a pitch to force in the run.

It remained 1-0 until the top of the eighth when the North added its second run on a RBI single by Kurt Mertins.

The South's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth as Josh Donaldson singled and scored on a double by Joshua Horton. When Collin DeLome followed with another single, the South threatened to take the lead. But, with runners at second and third, Bobby Cassevah retired Corey Brown on strikes and Eric Sogard on a ground out to end the threat.

Johnston allowed a leadoff single to Craig Cooper in the ninth, but he retired the next three hitters to end the game. He was credited with a save, while Springfield's Trey Hearne gained the win.

The Texas League's two-day All-Star Break will end on Thursday as all eight teams return to action. Tulsa will begin a six-game road trip in Corpus Christi. Chaz Roe (2-1, 2.55 ERA) will open the series against Sergio Perez (6-6, 4.60 ERA) of the Hooks with first pitch scheduled for 7:05PM.
