Brevard falls short to Lakeland in doubleheader finale

August 26, 2013

VIERA, Fla. - Another late comeback attempt fell short for the Brevard County Manatees in the second game of Monday night's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium as they fell 3-2 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers and were swept in the twinbill.

A three-run home run from Dean Green after a leadoff walk and a single gave the Flying Tigers a 3-0 lead before the first out was recorded.

Brevard County (27-34 second half, 64-64 overall) battled back, with Mitch Haniger's one-out double and an RBI single from Ben McMahan putting the 'Tees on the board in the bottom of the fourth.

In the sixth, a leadoff walk drawn by Haniger was followed by a single from Cody Hawn that pushed Haniger to third. Greg Hopkins drove Haniger home with a RBI base hit to right, but the Manatees ended up leaving runners on second and third at the end of the inning.

Lakeland (29-27, 59-65) starting pitcher Patrick Cooper did not factor into the decision, as he left the game alongside the trainer and pitching coach after a four-pitch walk to Hopkins with two outs in the fourth inning. He was charged with just one run, with the RBI hit coming against reliever Nick Avila. Cooper surrendered two singles and two walks.

For the Manatees, Taylor Mangum (1-2, 4.71) was making his first professional start of the mound. After a rocky first inning, Mangum settled down and made it through six innings, as he surrendered six hits and three walks, while fanning three. Dan Meadows threw a perfect seventh to keep the 'Tees within striking distance.

The third game of the series will begin at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Tyler Cravy (4-2, 2.18 ERA) will look to continue his dominance on the mound for the Manatees, as he will be opposed by Kevin Eichhorn (2-5, 3.52 ERA) for the Flying Tigers.
