Dmitri Young to Join Potomac on Tuesday

First baseman will be in starting lineup for Tuesday's 12:05 ET tilt
July 13, 2009
WOODBRIDGE, Va.- The Potomac Nationals announced after their 7-3 victory against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday that Washington Nationals' first baseman Dmitri Young will be joining the team for Tuesday afternoon's 12:05 ET game against the Hillcats.

Young spent the majority of the 2009 season in extended spring training rehabbing back and hip problems. He began his Minor-League assignment on June 26 with the Gulf Coast League Nationals, hitting .167 in three games. He then joined the Double-A Harrisburg Senators on June 30, playing in seven games for the Senators.

With the Eastern League on their All-Star break currently and the Nationals wanting Young to keep getting consistent at-bats, Young was sent to Potomac to continue his climb back to the Major Leagues.

Young, the 4th overall selection in the 1991 amateur draft by the St. Louis Cardinals has played for four different Major League teams in his lengthy career. He made his big league debut on August 29, 1996 with the Cardinals, and has since donned the uniforms of the Cincinnati Reds, the Detroit Tigers, and now the Washington Nationals.

He signed with the Nats on February 14, 2007 and made quite an impression on the Beltway in his first tour with the club. In 2007, Young hit .320 with 13 home runs and 74 RBI with a stellar on-base percentage of .378 in 136 games with the Nats while being named Major League Baseball's Comeback Player of the Year. He also earned a selection to his second career All-Star game, the other coming in 2003 while with the Tigers.

In 2008, Young played in 50 games with the Nationals, batting .280 before injuries cut his season short.
