Bats' Young Guns Conquer Knights 2-0

Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats used youth to defeat the Charlotte Knights on a rainy night at Louisville Slugger Field. As half the city was underwater, the Bats played ball after only a ten minute delay. It was the final game of the series, and the final game of the homestand for Louisville. Chris Denove hit his first Triple-A home run to give the Bats the early lead, as they held on to win 2-0. There were 6,557 fans in attendance for one of the shortest games in Bats' history at one-hour, fifty-eight minutes.

Both teams used efficient pitching to start the game as each team collected only one hit going into the bottom of the third.

In the third, Louisville's offense came alive with a solo blast by catcher Chris Denove. It was Denove's first career Triple-A home run and gave the Bats the 1-0 lead. It looked as if the Bats would continue their onslaught as Drew Stubbs hit the next pitch to right-center for a triple. Knights starter Matt Zaleski got out of the jam however, and held the Bats in check the rest of his innings.

Louisville managed to add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when McDonald doubled in a run to left after singles by Denove and Chris Heisey, making it 2-0 Bats.

The Bats offense was led by Denove's homer and Stubbs' triple. Chris Heisey also doubled and singled for Louisville.

Bats' starter Travis Wood (1-1, 2.89) pitched effectively in only his third Triple-A game going seven innings, giving up no runs on three hits, while walking two and striking out four.

Logan Ondrusek came on in the ninth in relief to get the save.

Zaleski (0-1, 1.50) pitched well, but took the loss going six innings, giving up one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out six.

The Bats are off Wednesday, but continue action Thursday in Rochester at 7:05pm. Probable starters are LHP Matt Maloney (7-8, 2.72) for the Bats and RHP Kevin Mulvey (4-6, 4.33) for Rochester.The game can be heard on Bats Radio at Batsbaseball.com.
