David Arias - 1996

The Stats: .322 average (156 hits in 485 at bats), .390 OBP, .901 OPS, 34 doubles, 2 triples, 18 home runs, 93 runs batted in, 3 stolen bases

The Facts: Signed by the Seattle Mariners as an amateur free agent in 1992 out of the Dominican Republic; Midwest League All Star and Home Run Derby Champion; Opening Day Age: 20

The Case:  Youngest of the candidates had the highest batting average, most home runs, and was tops in RBI of the four.

 

Shawn McCorkle - 2000

The Stats: .289 average (125 hits in 432 at bats), .412 OBP, .905 OPS, 29 doubles, 4 triple, 17 home runs, 73 runs batted in, 4 stolen bases

The Facts: Seattle Mariners 7th round draft pick in 1998 out of Montclair State University; Midwest League All Star; Midwest League Post-Season All Star; Opening Day Age: 22

The Case:  Best defensive first baseman of the group and had a great eye at the plate, leading to a candidate leading on base percentage and OPS.

 

Jon Nelson - 2003

The Stats: .264 average (142 hits in 537 at bats), .292 OBP, .724 OPS, 38 doubles, 2 triples, 16 home runs, 91 runs batted in, 13 stolen bases

The Facts: Seattle Mariners 26th round draft pick in 2001 out of Dixie College; Opening Day Age: 23

The Case:  A combination of power and speed, with the most extra base hits and stolen bases among candidates.

 

Marshall Hubbard - 2005

The Stats: .297 average (116 hits in 391 at bats), .387 OBP, .883 OPS, 25 doubles, 1 triple, 17 home runs, 77 runs batted in, 4 stolen bases

The Facts: Seattle Mariners 8th round draft pick in 2004 out of University of North Carolina, Asheville; Opening Day Age: 23
