Westwood tosses five scoreless in 7-2 win

Pitcher retires the final 14 batters he faces to move magic number to 4
June 8, 2014

VISALIA, Calif. - Kyle Westwood fired five innings of one-hit baseball and the Lancaster JetHawks scored a run in seven of nine innings to defeat the Visalia Rawhide 7-2 on Saturday evening.

One night after needing a late comeback to pick up the win, the JetHawks (41-23) got the job done early against the Rawhide (33-31). Kyle Westwood surrendered a one-out double in the first inning, but went on to retire the next 14 batters to finish off a spectacular outing.

Westwood (5-3) was extremely sharp, striking out the side in his final inning of work. Gonzalo Sanudo tossed 2.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs, while Jamaine Cotton fired 1.1 scoreless innings in the win.

Lancaster got on the board in the first inning when Tony Kemp singled, stole second and later scored on a groundout by Rio Ruiz. Spencer Arroyo (4-3) struggled all night, surrendering eight hits and four runs in six innings of work.

Conrad Gregor singled in the second and scored on a two-out single by Jordan Scott. Carlos Correa tripled to start the third and came home on an error by Raul Navarro.

The fourth inning came and went without a run scoring, but the JetHawks added one more in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings to wrap up the win. The big moment for Lancaster came in the sixth when Tony Kemp stole home on a pickoff throw to first base.

Lancaster has won the first two games of the four-game series and the team's magic number to clinch the first half title is four. The JetHawks will send Lance McCullers to the hill on Sunday to oppose Aaron Blair. The two first-round picks will square off at 1 p.m. at Recreation Park.
