Z's, Marlins agree to two-year extension

Miami will remain Zephyrs' parent club through 2016 season
June 26, 2014

The New Orleans Zephyrs and Miami Marlins have agreed to a two-year extension of their player development contract, running through the end of the 2016 season.

"The Marlins are excited to extend our partnership with the New Orleans Zephyrs through the 2016 season," said Brian Chattin, Marlins Director of Player Development." With its great facility and tremendous support from General Manager Mike Schline and his staff, New Orleans is an ideal player development partner. The past several years with the Zephyrs have been very enjoyable for our players and staff, and we are thrilled to be continuing this productive affiliation."

The Marlins will continue to provide the players and coaching personnel for the Zephyrs. The teams signed the original two-year agreement in September 2008, and have since renewed the contract every two seasons. In 2013, the Marlins became the first Major League club since 1999 to visit the Crescent City when they played the Z's in an exhibition game at Zephyr Field.

"We are eager to continue our affiliation with the Miami Marlins," said Mike Schline, Zephyrs General Manager. "We have built a tremendous relationship with the Marlins over the last six seasons, and we take great pride in our role in helping develop big league players."

"The Marlins are enjoying a fine season, both at the major league and minor league levels, and we are happy that we will be able to remain a part of an exciting time in a great organization for another two years."

In the first five years of the affiliation, 44 Zephyrs players have gone on to play for the Marlins, who recently summoned heralded prospects such as pitchers Andrew Heaney and Anthony DeSclafani and outfielder Jake Marisnick from New Orleans.

The Zephyrs currently sit in first place and are in search of a third straight season finishing .500 or better for the first time since moving to New Orleans in 1993.
