June 28, 2014

LANCASTER, Calif. - Chan Moon helped give Mark Appel a big lead by hitting two three-run home runs as the JetHawks beat the Lake Elsinore Storm, 13-5, on Friday night at The Hangar.

Lake Elsinore (44-35) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Appel (1-3) with a run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning but the JetHawks (47-31) took advantage of a Duanel Jones error to score five unearned runs in the bottom half.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Tanner Mathis grounded a ball under the glove of first baseman Duanel Jones to score two runs and extend the inning. Moon followed with his first three-run homer to put Lancaster ahead for good.

The JetHawks chased starter Coby Cowgill (1-1) with a six-run third inning. Brandon Meredith and Conrad Gregor walked with one out before Roberto Peña drove in a run with a single. Danry Vasquez loaded the bases with an infield single and Jack Mayfield picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice before Mathis picked up a run with a single. Cody Hebner replaced Cowgill and Moon greeted him with another three-run home run to put Lancaster up, 11-3.

Appel did not allow a hit over his final three innings. He finished with three runs on five hits over five innings. The 2013 first overall pick struck out three and walked one.

Brian Holmes allowed a two-run homer in his first inning but settled down to throw the final four and pick up his second save.

Gregor doubled in his first at-bat to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, the longest streak for the JetHawks this season.

The two clubs continue the series with the third game on Saturday night at The Hangar. Kyle Westwood will start against Joe Ross. First pitch is at 6 p.m.

The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a JetHawks World Cup soccer jersey presented by LoanMart.
