JetHawks docked by Ports late rally

Stockton puts up three in eighth, Lancaster drops series opener
July 2, 2014

STOCKTON, Calif. - The JetHawks held three separate leads on Tuesday night but the Stockton Ports answered each time and rallied to win, 7-5, on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

Matt Heidenreich (2-2) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in the eighth inning as Stockton erased Lancaster's late 5-4 lead.

The JetHawks (48-34) have held multi-run leads in each of the last three games but have been unable to come up with a win. The club has dropped eight of its last 10.

The go-ahead run came home on a Bruce Maxwell base hit to centerfield. Teoscar Hernandez threw a one-hopper to the plate and home plate umpire Malachi Moore ruled that Roberto Peña's missed the tag on runner Renato Nunez. Peña and manager Rodney Linares argued the call.

Lance McCullers got the start on the same day he was activated from the disabled list and threw a scoreless first inning. Kent Emanuel, the original scheduled starter, entered for the second inning. McCullers was only slated to throw an inning.

Emanuel tossed two scoreless innings before allowing two home runs, a two-run shot to Nunez and a solo homer for Ryon Healy, to allow Stockton to move ahead 3-2.

Lancaster had grabbed an early lead when Conrad Gregor doubled in the first inning and scored on an error. The double extended Gregor's league-best hit streak to 18 games.

The JetHawks tied the game on a Rio Ruiz scoring fly ball in the fifth inning and jumped ahead when Dan Gulbransen hit a solo homer to start the sixth inning.

Daniel Robertson got the run back for Stockton (46-36) with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the sixth against Emanuel. The lefty allowed four on five hits over four innings.

Lancaster took its third lead of the night in the seventh inning. Hernandez doubled to lead off and scored on a Ruiz single.

Austin House ended the game with a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 11th save. Hernandez singled in the inning for his third hit of the game.

The clubs continue the series on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Chris Devenski will pitch against Yeiper Castillo. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
