For the fifth time in the month of July, the Dunedin Blue Jays pitching staff tossed a shutout, holding the Florida Fire Frogs scoreless in a 4-0 Tuesday afternoon win at Dunedin Stadium. After RHP Robeto Osuna threw a scoreless first inning, LHP Zach Logue provided 7.0 innings of two-hit ball, striking out five and walking none to earn his sixth win with Dunedin.
The Blue Jays stayed hot at the plate as well, knocking 11 hits including three doubles and a triple. SS Kevin Smith got the scoring going early, leading off the second inning by lacing a ball deep to the right-centerfield gap. Florida RF Garrison Schwartz nearly made a highlight-reel grab with a leaping effort at the wall, but the ball popped loose from his glove as he fell to the ground and Smith coasted into third with a triple. DH Riley Adams brought Smith home with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0 in Dunedin's favor.
C Alberto Mineo led off the third inning by lofting an opposite field single to left. CF Joshua Palacios followed by doubling to the gap, putting two runners in scoring position for 3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The top prospect wasted no time bringing in the runs, lacing a ground ball down the the line past the third baseman before beating out the relay throw from left for a hustle double. Smith brought home Guerrero Jr. with a single up the middle to make it 4-0.
The lead would be all the Dunedin pitching staff needed. After allowing an infield single in the third inning, Logue didn't allow another base runner until Marcus Mooney singled with two outs in the eighth. He finished his stellar afternoon with 7.0 innings pitched, two hits, no runs, no walks, and five strikeouts, winning his sixth game with Dunedin and ninth of the season. RHP Anderson Nunez made his Dunedin debut in the ninth, striking out a batter and tossing a 1-2-3 inning to finish the game.
The win was Dunedin's 14th in their last 15 games, improving their second half record to 19-7, best in the Florida State League. The Blue Jays and Fire Frogs will finish their three-game set at Dunedin Stadium tomorrow evening at 6:30 PM. RHP Yennsy Diaz (3-2, 3.12 ERA) will take the mound for the Jays.
