Mason Auer Tallies Tying Hit and Second Save, Keys Win 6-5

Frederick, MD – The Frederick Keys were victorious in the first ever 4th of July game hosted at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium, beating the Williamsport Crosscutters by a final score of 6-5 on Sunday night. The Keys set a season record, announcing attendance at 8,237.

Frederick opened the scoring in the 2nd inning, working four consecutive walks against Crosscutters starter Tyler Bosma. Mason Auer led off the inning, and was followed by Tremaine Spears, Eddie McCabe, and Yareb Martinez who walked with the bases loaded. JP Fullerton brought home the second run, reaching on a fielders choice. Kevin Jimenez was retired on a groundout to give the Keys a 3-0 lead.

Shane Barringer had the longest appearance by a Keys starter, working five innings allowing five hits and two runs. The two runs came in the 5th inning after an error allowed Trey Steffler to reach. Chaz Salter then tripled to make it a 3-1 game. He came home to score on a single by Kyle Smith.

In the 6th, Williamsport added two more runs against reliever Sean Fisher who worked one inning in the game. Fisher walked the second and third batters he faced after starting off hot with a strikeout looking. Sean Ross reached on a taylormade double play ball that Zach Dezenzo was unable to field cleanly. Another run came home on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Smith to make it a 4-3 Cutters lead.

Williamsport would add one more run in the 7th inning after a pair of one out singles.

Frederick clicked into gear as Jimenez led off the 7th with a 13 pitch walk against Owen Holt. Doanes then singled as the Keys moved runners station to station. A single by Dezenzo loaded the bases up and left the tying run at second base. With one out, Mason Auer lined a ball back up the middle that found its way to centerfield, scoring two runs and tying the game at 5-5.

Martinez led off the 8th inning with a single, and reached second base on a throwing error by Williamsport. Fullerton moved Martinez to third base, grounding out for the first out of the 8th inning. The Keys would bring Jimenez to the plate with an opportunity to take the lead. Jimenez lifted a ball to left field, scoring Martinez on the sac fly.

Auer pitched a perfect 9th inning, picking up his second save of the Keys season. Auer punched out Michael Turconi to finish the game.

The Keys are back in action, continuing a five game home stand tomorrow at 12 PM against the Williamsport Crosscutters. The first half of the season comes to a close on Thursday as the Keys prepare for the MLB Draft next weekend.
