The Eugene Emeralds (14-12, 30-34) dropped the first game of a crucial three-game series against the Hillsboro Hops (16-10, 40-24) on Tuesday night, falling by a final score of 5-0 at PK Park.

The Eugene Emeralds (14-12, 30-34) dropped the first game of a crucial three-game series against the Hillsboro Hops (16-10, 40-24) on Tuesday night, falling by a final score of 5-0 at PK Park.

Entering the day just one game behind the first place South Division-leading Hillsboro Hops, the Ems aimed to pull back into a tie atop the standings with just two weeks left in the regular season.
Hillsboro wasted no time jumping out to an early lead thanks to a Jogre Barrosa infield single and stolen base that was soon followed by a Liover Peguero single to score Barrosa and make it 1-0, Hops, after just one inning.
The Hops went on to score one run in the second, third, fifth, and sixth innings, highlighted by solo home runs from Tristin English in the third and Dominic Canzone in the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Emeralds offense struggled to get much going after loading the bases in the first inning, mustering a total of three hits on the evening while Hillsboro pitchers Conor Grammes and Marcos Tineo combined to shutout the Ems, earning a major 5-0 win for Hillsboro.
The Ems and Hops face off again on Wednesday night at 7:05pm PST with RHP Yovanny Cruz slated to start, the nineteenth-ranked prospect within the Chicago Cubs system per MLB.com.
