The first place SeaWolves dropped their first rubber game of the season as they were beaten by the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 11-10, in 13 innings on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
The SeaWolves jumped ahead in the top of the first inning against Richmond starter Sean Hjelle. Jose Azocar kept the inning alive with a two-out single to right, bringing Josh Lester to the plate. Lester uncorked his 17th home run of the season over the wall in right to give Erie a 2-0 lead.
The 'Wolves added to the lead in the third. Cole Peterson, Dylan Rosa and Isaac Paredes all singled to load the bases for Azocar. Azocar grounded into a double play, scoring Peterson for a 3-0 lead. After a Lester walk, Kody Clemens singled home Rosa for a 4-0 advantage. It was the first Double-A hit for Clemens.
Paredes led off the top of the fifth inning for Erie with a double and scored on a two-out Clemens single for a 5-0 lead.
Richmond battled back in the bottom of the fifth. Heliot Ramos and Jalen Miller each singled with one out against Erie starter Logan Shore. With two outs, Gio Brusa belted a three-run home run to make it a 5-3 game.
Erie went back up by four runs in the top of the sixth. Peterson singled with two outs and Rosa reached on an error. Paredes singled home both baserunners with his third hit of the game.
Richmond tied the game in the last of the sixth against Erie reliever Mark Ecker. Pete Maris singled with one out and Ryan Howard singled with two outs to keep the inning alive. Ecker walked Ramos, loading the bases for Miller. Miller connected on a bases-clearing double to straight away center making it a one-run game. Erie summoned Zac Houston to get out of the jam. Houston struck out Joey Bart but on a wild pitch, Bart reached. Numata attempted to throw out Miller at third and on a throwing error, he scored, tying the game.
The game remained tied into the 10th inning for the third straight game. The teams exchanged runs in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings.
Matt Winn (1-1) tossed a scoreless top of the 13th to send the game in the bottom half, tied up 10-10. Erie summoned Alex Lange (1-1) to pitch the bottom of the 13th. Jacob Heyward walked, putting runners on first and second. Johneshwy Fargas stole third and Heyward moved to second on defensive indifference. Lange struck out Bryce Johnson for the first out but Maris won the game on a base hit to right.
The SeaWolves continue their road trip as they begin a four-game series against the Harrisburg Senators on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
