The RockHounds "walked off" for the second straight night ... this time in extra innings ... defeating the Corpus Christi Hooks, 3-2 in 10 innings, Friday night at Security Bank Ballpark.
The game was tied, 1-1, going into extras and the Hooks scored once in the top of the 10th. Greg Deichmann, who returned from a seven-week stay in the Injured List Wednesday, ripped an RBI double in home half of the inning, driving in (designated runner) Edwin Diaz to tie the game. He went to third on Taylor Motter's ground out and scored the game-winning run on Dan Gamache's RBI "walk-off ground out."
The 'Hounds took a 1-0 lead on their first two hits of the game against Hooks starter Tyler Ivey. Mikey White doubled to right field with one out in the fourth and Diaz brought him home with an RBI single between third and short (his team-leading 54th RBI).
Corpus Christi scored an unearned run in the eighth on a two-base throwing error and Jake Meyers' RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
Both starting pitchers were outstanding. Ivey allowed one run on three hits over six innings, walking one and striking out seven. The RockHounds' Grant Holmes tossed five scoreless innings, scattering four hits with no walks and a personal season-high nine strikeouts.
The game was played in front of an outstanding crowd of 6,184 on Copa Night (Matamoscas de Midessa).
Notables
The RoughRiders made it two-in-a-row over Amarillo, defeating the Sod Poodles, 2-1, at Frisco. Amarillo (28-19) leads the RockHounds (24-23) by four games ... Frisco (23-23) by 4½ ... and Corpus Christi (22-25) by six. The RockHounds (58-58) lead the potential wild card race by a game-and-a-half over Frisco (56-59) and by three games over Corpus (55-61).
Edwin Diaz is 8-for-18 (.444) in the homestand, with four runs, three doubles and three RBI.
Greg Deichmann played in just his second game since June 19 after spending seven weeks in the IL (hamstring). In those two games, he is 2-for-8 with two runs, a double, an RBI and two stolen bases. Greg is rated Oakland's # 17 prospect by MLB.com.
Forrest Whitely, the Houston Astros' # 2 prospect (ranked 17th overall by MLB.com) was scratched from his scheduled start Friday but is now tentatively set to take the mound Saturday night. The matchup is, again, tremendous with the RockHounds sending the tandem of Daulton Jefferies and James Kaprielian to the hill. They are rated Oakland's # 12 and 13 prospects in the latest MLB.com rankings.
