Right-hander Brian Keller allowed two home runs in a rocky second inning, giving the New Hampshire Fisher Cats the only runs they needed Tuesday night, as the Thunder fell, 4-1, in front of a crowd of 6,421 at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Harold Ramirez led off the second inning with a home run off Keller for an early 1-0 New Hampshire (48-34) lead. Two singles and two outs later, Cavan Biggio added onto the early Fisher Cats advantage with a towering three-run homer down the right field line, his league-leading 17th home run.
After the Biggio home run, Keller recovered to keep the game close for the Thunder (47-36), retiring 15 of the final 17 batters he faced, pitching through the seventh.
The only run Trenton managed, however, came on a Trey Amburgey solo home run in the sixth off Fisher Cats starter Josh DeGraaf.
Relievers Kirby Snead, Travis Bergen, and Andrew Case combined for three and two-thirds scoreless innings for New Hampshire, as the Thunder went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the third.
The Thunder won the series, three games to two, but the loss denied Trenton possession of first place in the Eastern Division, as the team entered the game just half a game behind the first-place Fisher Cats in the standings.
Your Thunder travel to Altoona, Pennsylvania on Wednesday to open a five-game series against the Altoona Curve at 7pm. LHP Ryan Bollinger (3-3, 6.18) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Eduardo Vera (1-2, 5.45) will go for Altoona. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45pm on 920 AM The Jersey and online at www.TrentonThunder.com/Broadcast
