Delmarva Rally Falls Just Short

*ZEBULON, NC: *The Delmarva Shorebirds (15-22) fell to the Carolina Mudcats (25-13) for the second consecutive night as they were defeated by a score of 6-4.

After a scoreless first, the Mudcats took the lead in the second by scoring four runs on an RBI single by Blayberg Diaz, followed by a two-run double by Daniel Guilarte. Jadher Areinamo finished the inning with a run-scoring single to plate Guilarte to give Carolina a 4-0 lead.

The Shorebirds would look to chip away starting in the fourth as Anderson De Los Santos singled Matthew Etzel home with a liner down the right-field line to make it a 4-1 game.

The offense put another strong threat together an inning later as they loaded the bases with nobody out. They produced a run on an RBI single by Matthew Etzel with Noelberth Romero picking up an RBI himself one batter later as he was hit by a pitch with the base still loaded to pull the Shorebirds within one at 4-3. But The Mudcats would escape the jam with a double play ball off the bat of Anderson De Los Santos to hold a one run-lead at the halfway point.

Carolina would then answer those runs with two of their own on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jace Avina with an additional run scoring on an error to push the Delmarva deficit back to three at 6-3.

Matthew Etzel would begin another rally attempt for Delmarva in the seventh as he picked up his third hit of the game with one out. He then stole second base to put himself in scoring position for Noelberth Romero who drove him in with a single to left-center to get the Shorebirds back within striking distance at 6-4.

However, Delmarva was unable to get any closer as the Mudcats held them off to pick up their second straight win in the series as they earned a 6-4 victory.

Jeferson Figueroa (2-1) was the winning pitcher in relief for Carolina with Delmarva starter, Raul Rangel (0-1) taking the loss. Yerlin Rodriguez (9) picked up the save.

Some notable offensive performances include Matthew Etzel who singled three times in the game, scored twice, drove in a run, and stole three bases. Mac Horvath reached three times in his Single-A debut with two walks and a single while stealing a base of his own and 1st round draft selection, Enrique Bradfield Jr. walked twice in his first game with a run and a stolen base. Delmarva's offense swiped a season-best six bases on Wednesday night.

The Shorebirds will now look to pick up their first win of the series on Thursday night Yaqui Rivera gets the start against Patricio Aquino for the Mudcats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
