LOWELL, MA - After falling in the first two games of the series, the Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox, looked to salvage the series and pick up a win on Tuesday night.
After six shutout innings, it looked as if neither team would crack the scoreboard, eventually the Aberdeen IronBirds, affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, cracked - giving way to a 2-0 victory for the Stedler-Division leaders.
With the victory, the Spinners (40-32) picked up a game on second-place Connecticut and saw their division lead to 5.0 games and magic number fall to one - setting up a situation where Lowell could clinch the Stedler Division at home for the first time in team history with a victory alone or a loss, coupled with a Tigers loss.
The IronBirds (39-30), however, fell out of first place with the loss.
Ryan Zeferjahn got the start for Lowell, tossing three shutout innings - allowing two hits and striking out three. He did not walk a batter. Kelvin Sanchez picked up the win for the Spinners, going three innings without allowing a run. He also only allowed one hit and walked one and struck out one.
Jaxx Groshans led the way for Lowell going 3-for-4 with an RBI single that got the Spinners guys on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring Wil Dalton from second base.
An inning later, Lowell got on the board for a second time. Nick Decker led the inning off with a triple off the left field wall and scored when Aberdeen catcher Maverick Handley dropped a routine pop fly off the bat of Antoni Flores .
After Osvaldo De La Rosa tossed two scoreless innings, Kris Jackson came into shut the door and put the nails on the IronBirds' coffin. He did so, picking up his seventh save in Lowell in the process and eighth overall in 2019.
The Spinners are back in action on Wednesday night, looking to clinch the division with a win on their home field for the first time in team history, when they take on the Tri-City ValleyCats, affiliate of the Houston Astros - first pitch is a 7:05 p.m.
