MLB.com released its top 30 prospects for each of the 30 Major League systems yesterday. The San Diego Padres top 30 prospects featured 13 players that were on the Amarillo roster during the 2019 season, and 10 players expected to be with the Sod Poodles in the 2020 season.
The number-one ranked prospect in the Padres system is southpaw MacKenzie Gore. The North Carolina native is also ranked as the fifth overall prospect and number-one ranked pitching prospect in all of baseball. Gore made five starts with the Sod Poodles and posted a record of 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA, 25 strikeouts, 20 hits allowed, and eight walks in 21.2 innings of work. The former first-round pick’s most affective outing with Amarillo came on July 26 at Springfield where he threw 5.1 shutout innings, allowed only four hits, and stuck out six batters in his second Double-A victory. Gore was a non-roster invitee to Padres spring training this season.
Ranked third on the top 30 list is right-hander Luis Patiño, who made two starts for the Sod Poodles in the month of August. Before being assigned to Amarillo, Patiño played in the 2019 Futures Game with fellow teammate Gore. In two starts, Patiño tossed 7.2 innings and posted a 1.17 ERA, but was dealt no-decisions in both of outings.
Expected to make the jump to Double-A this upcoming season is catcher Luis Campusano, who is ranked fourth on the Padres top 30 prospects list. The Padres top catching prospect appeared in a career-high 110 games with High-A Lake Elsinore last season and led the California League and all of High-A with a .325 batting average. Campusano was named a California League midseason and postseason All-Star, Baseball America High-A All-star, MiLB Organizational All-Star, and the California League’s Most Valuable Player.
Amarillo’s postseason hero Taylor Trammell is ranked the Padres fifth overall prospect to start the 2020 season after he was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in a three-team trade in July of last season. The outfielder has been selected to the Futures Game the last two seasons and was named Most Valuable Player in the 2018 game. Trammell is ranked the 57th overall prospect and 13th best outfielder in all of baseball.
Another player expected to make the jump to Double-A this season is infielder Gabriel Arias, who is ranked the number eight overall prospect in the Padres system. Arias was a non-roster invitee to Padres spring training to start the season. The middle infielder finished fourth in the California League with a .302 batting average and 144 hits. Arias also finished tied for third with 75 RBI and third with 224 total bases. Arias was named a California League midseason All-Star last season with High-A Lake Elsinore.
Additional players that are expected to be on the Amarillo roster in 2020 featured on the Padres top 30 prospect list are RHP Joey Cantillo, INF Hudson Potts, RHP Reggie Lawson, and OF Jorge Ona.
The Sod Poodles host their 2020 home opener at HODGETOWN on Thursday, April 16 against the Arkansas Travelers (Seattle Mariners Double-A affiliate) for a three-game set. First pitch for the 2020 home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The #Padres graduated a bunch of prospects to #MLB over the past year -- including Fernando Tatis Jr. & Chris Paddack -- but they STILL have one of the best farm systems in all of baseball.
