FORT MYERS, Fla. - Chris Vallimont carried a perfect game into the sixth, and a no-hitter into the eighth, before the Jupiter Hammerheads erupted for eight runs in the eighth, in a come from behind 9-1 triumph on Friday night at Hammond Stadium.
Vallimont (2-5), who was traded by the Miami Marlins to the Minnesota Twins in July as part of the Sergio Romo trade, was locked in from the start, striking out the side in the first. The right-hander lost the perfect game with a two-out walk in the sixth and the no-hitter on a single in the eighth. He allowed two runs in seven plus innings of work.
Ernie De La Trinidad broke the tie in the fifth with a solo home run to right. The blast, De La Trinidad's third of the season, traveled 390 feet and was also the first hit of the night for the Miracle.
Vallimont started the eighth but was lifted after allowing a single to Nick Fortes and a double to Demetrius Sims. James Nelson rudely greeted Joe Record, with a two-run single on the first pitch Record threw to give Jupiter their first lead of the game. Later in the inning, with Jupiter now leading 5-1, Lazaro Alonso extended the lead to 6-1 with a run scoring single to center. The Hammerheads tacked on two runs later in the inning.
Jerar Encarnacion homered in the ninth to finish the scoring.
Record and Yennier Cano combined to allow seven runs in two innings.
The series continues on Saturday night in Fort Myers. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
