CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- The Norfolk Tides (17-22) lost their first game of the series, 9-6, at the Charlotte Knights (16-23), on Thursday night at Truist Field.

Jacob Nottingham got the Tides on the board first in the second inning, crushing a solo shot. Charlotte answered immediately and took the lead when Mark Payton launched a two-run homer in the bottom-half to put the Knights up, 2-1.

Norfolk was able to tie it up in the third inning when Greg Cullen ripped his first home run of the season. The Knights answered yet again, but this time with five runs. Adam Haseley hit an RBI double to tie the game. He would later score on an RBI single by Yolbert Sanchez to give Charlotte the lead. Three more unearned runs would score after a couple errors, which included a two-run double by Payton to make it 7-2.

The Tides crept closer in the sixth inning by putting up a four-spot. The Tides were able to load the bases with no outs and Nottingham walked to score the first run. The next two hitters struck out, bringing up Cadyn Grenier who eventually walked to score the second run. The final two runs scored on an RBI infield single by Adley Rutschman, where Nottingham scored the final run of the inning after a throwing error in the attempt to get Rutschman at first.

The dagger was sunk by Charlotte in the bottom of the eighth inning when Sanchez hit a two-run homer, giving the Knights a, 9-6, win. Both teams are back in action tomorrow night for game four of this six-game set at Truist Field. LHP DL Hall (0-0, 4.05) is scheduled to start for the Tides, while Charlotte has yet to announce a starter. First pitch is slated for 7:04 p.m.
