Five Home Runs Overpower Norfolk in Series Finale at Memphis

The Norfolk Tides were overpowered Sunday afternoon, losing, 12-6, at the Memphis Redbirds. The Redbirds hit five home runs, two coming from Nolan Gorman and Clint Coulter each.

Norfolk struck first with two runs in the first inning. The bases were loaded after Mason McCoy led off with a double, Zach Jarrett walked, and Brett Cumberland was hit by a pitch. Seth Mejias-Brean hit McCoy and Jarrett in on a single to right field, putting the Tides up, 2-0.

The Redbirds would have their first big inning in the bottom of the second. Kramer Robertson scored on a wild pitch and Coulter hit his first home run of the game, a two-run shot. Memphis would take a 4-2 lead in the third when Gorman hit his first home run of the game.

The Tides tied the game up at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning when J.C. Escarra belted hit a solo homer run, his second of the season. Jahmai Jones would hit an RBI single with runners on second and third, but Lane Thomas would throw out McCoy at the plate from left field to end the inning.

Memphis doubled their score with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Thomas hit a two-run double after his outfield assist. He then scored on Gorman’s second home run, giving the Redbirds an 8-4 lead.

For a second straight inning, Norfolk would respond with two runs. Cumberland blasted a two-run homer, his ninth of the season. Memphis was relentless though, responding with three runs in the bottom of the fifth when Coulter homered for a second time and Thomas joined the fun with his fourth home run of the season. His was a two-run shot to put Memphis ahead, 11-6.

Gorman would hit his third hit in the bottom of the seventh, an RBI single to put the cherry on top, giving Memphis the, 12-6, win and the six-game sweep over Norfolk. It was the Tides’ seventh loss in a row and the 10th in their last 11 games.

After a league off day tomorrow, the Tides will head to Gwinnett to face the Braves in a six-game set before returning to Harbor Park. RHP Konner Wade (1-1, 2.97) will pitch the series opener at Gwinnett, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
