The Tides opened their six-game series in Jacksonville with a 4-3 win over the Jumbo Shrimp Tuesday night.

Dean Kremer made his second start for Norfolk and took a no-decision after allowing three runs on just one hit over 4.2 innings. He walked two and struck out seven, matching his strikeout total from his first start with Norfolk on 6/1 at Durham.

Kremer had not allowed a hit until the bottom of the fifth when Jacksonville’s Connor Justus hit a ground-rule double with one out. The only run Kremer allowed up to that point was as a result of a sacrifice fly in the first inning off the bat of Justin Twine.

Kremer was removed from the game with two outs in the fifth, making way for reliever Cody Carroll, who allowed two singles which scored both inherited runners.

Zach Jarrett opened the scoring for Norfolk with a two-run home run to left field in the top of the fifth, giving Norfolk a 2-1 lead. It was Jarrett’s second homer with the Tides since joining Norfolk on 5/21 from Double-A Bowie.

Austin Hays, who began a Major League rehab assignment with the Tides on Tuesday, launched the first pitch he saw from Jacksonville starter Shawn Morimando in the top of the sixth for a solo home run, tying the game at 3-3.

Morimando, making his fifth start of the year for Jacksonville, took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits with three walks, while matching his season high with eight strikeouts.

The Tides took a 4-3 lead in the sixth after Jahmai Jones drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Chance Sisco. Jones, who rejoined the Tides Tuesday after missing 24 games on Norfolk’s Injured List with an oblique strain, is ranked as the No. 16 prospect in the Orioles system according to MLB.com.

After a scoreless relief outing from Mickey Jannis, who allowed two hits over 2.1 innings, Eric Hanhold entered the game for the Tides with one out in the eighth.

Hanhold finished off the eighth without allowing a run and stayed in for what turned out to be a wild ninth inning. The first Jacksonville batter in the ninth, Chris Chinea, reached first on a fielding error by Hanhold. Chinea was replaced by pinch-runner Luis Marte, who stole second base after Hanhold struck out Brian Miller.

The next Jumbo Shrimp batter, Bryson Brigman, reached first on another fielding error, this time by Jahmai Jones, with Marte advancing to third on the play. The following batter, Jesus Sanchez, hit a slow ground ball to Tides first baseman Tyler Nevin, who charged in, fielded and threw out Marte at home plate to prevent the tying run from scoring.

Hanhold capped off the game with a huge strikeout of Justin Twine, getting him swinging and earning the save to secure Norfolk's victory.

Norfolk’s record moves to 11-18 on the season with the win, as Jacksonville is now 19-12. Both teams will face off again on Wednesday night, with Alex Wells (2-2, 7.64) getting the start for Norfolk and Luis Madero (4-1, 2.33) taking the hill for Jacksonville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at 121 Financial Ballpark in Jacksonville.
