Tides center fielder Ryan McKenna went 4-for-5 with a home run and a double and left-hander Kevin Smith turned in a solid Triple-A debut on the mound, but Norfolk (14-21) dropped Wednesday night’s game at Harbor Park to the Durham Bulls by a 7-5 score.

Wednesday’s pitching matchup featured a pair of top prospects making their Triple-A debuts, as Smith – the No. 15 prospect in the Orioles system – faced off against Durham’s Shane Baz, the No. 5 prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays organization and No. 74 prospect in Minor League Baseball.

Smith (4.1IP, 6H, 5R/3ER, 2BB, 4K) and Baz each worked around shaky starts to the game, with both pitchers allowing a run in the first inning before settling down to post scoreless second and third frames. Durham retook the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run from designated hitter Deivy Grullon, though both runs were unearned.

The Bulls added another pair of runs in the fifth, as a single by center fielder Josh Lowe plated two and chased Smith from the game. Norfolk reliever Cody Carroll (0.2IP, 0H, 0R) escaped the inning without further damage.

Norfolk left fielder Domingo Leyba ripped a two-run double in the bottom half of the inning to once again close the Tides’ deficit to two runs. The 25-year-old drove in three runs on the night and has 13 runs batted in over his first seven games with Norfolk.

After Durham’s Esteban Quiroz extended the Bulls’ lead to four with a two-run homer in the sixth inning, McKenna responded with a solo blast in the bottom of the seventh and Ramon Urias added an RBI double in the eighth to make it a 7-5 game.

Bulls reliever Drew Rasmussen pitched a scoreless ninth inning, earning his first Triple-A save and sealing the Tides’ fate in the process.

Tides second baseman Jahmai Jones extended his hitting streak to seven games with a first-inning single, while McKenna and Leyba combined for six hits and four runs batted in.

Norfolk and Durham (25-12) will play game three of their six-game series tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch at Harbor Park scheduled for 12:05 p.m. Right-hander Mickey Jannis will make his first start of the season for the Tides, while the Bulls will counter with righty Joe Ryan.
