Tides starter Alex Wells continued his torrid start to the month of June by tossing five shutout innings, as Brett Cumberland and Jahmai Jones each homered to lead the Tides (14-20) to a 4-1 victory over the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

Wells (W, 5.0IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 4K) and Durham starter Dietrich Enns each worked out of first-inning jams before settling down to post scoreless second innings. The Tides jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Cumberland’s two-out, two-run home run to left field.

Norfolk added to its lead in the fourth. A two-out double steal by Ramon Urias and Zach Jarrett put a pair of runners in scoring position for Jones, who slapped a slow, bouncing ground ball to third base and beat the throw to first to drive home the Tides’ third run of the evening.

Durham cut the Norfolk lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth. Bulls third baseman Wander Franco hit a one-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from the next batter, center fielder Josh Lowe.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jones launched a solo homer into the Norfolk bullpen in right field to extend Norfolk’s lead to 4-1. Reliever Konner Wade (3.0IP, 1H, 1R, 0BB, 1K) got the Tides through the eighth with the three-run lead intact.

Tides right-hander Isaac Mattson (SV, 1.0IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K) worked around a leadoff single to post a scoreless ninth inning, striking out Durham second baseman Kevin Padlo to end the game.

In 14 innings pitched in June, Wells has gone 3-0 and allowed just one earned run. He has not walked a batter this month, also striking out 14 hitters and holding opponents to a .082 batting average.

The Tides and Bulls (24-12) square off again tomorrow evening at 7:05. Left-hander Kevin Smith, the Orioles’ No. 15 prospect, will make his Triple-A debut with the Tides, while righty Shane Baz, the No. 5 prospect of the Tampa Bay Rays, will make his Triple-A debut for Durham.
