Shortstop Mason McCoy hit his league-leading fourth triple and drove in two runs, first baseman Taylor Davis added three more RBIs and the Tides (7-14) emerged victorious in an 10-7 slugfest with the Charlotte Knights on Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park, winning their fourth straight contest.

Mac Sceroler (1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K, HR) started for the Tides, having joined Norfolk on a Major League rehab assignment from Baltimore. The right-hander pitched a clean first inning, but allowed four runs in the second on a pair of walks, a single and a home run, putting Charlotte up 4-0.

The Tides got all four runs back in the bottom of the second. Catcher Austin Wynns’ solo homer put Norfolk on the board before McCoy tripled home two runners with a fly ball to center field. Second baseman Wilbis Santiago, making just his second appearance in the Tides’ starting lineup, singled home McCoy to tie the game.

After Charlotte briefly regained the lead with a lone run in the top of the third, Norfolk answered with four runs in the second half of the inning. Davis slapped an RBI single to right, Ryan Ripken notched two RBIs of his own with a base hit up the middle and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Chris Shaw scored another to make it an 8-5 game.

Charlotte chipped away at the lead in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring a run in each frame off of Tides left-hander Alex Wells (3.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K).

Norfolk relievers Evan Phillips, Claudio Custodio and Eric Hanhold each pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen to get the game into the ninth inning with the Tides on top. Davis added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with a double to make the score 10-7.

Right-hander Dusten Knight earned the Tides’ third save of the year, tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Norfolk and Charlotte (7-14) will face each other again Friday night at 7:05, with all seating capacity restrictions removed for the first time in 2021. Right-hander Conner Greene, coming off a strong seven-inning start in which he did not allow a run, will take the ball for the Tides. He will be opposed by former Tide and Oriole Mike Wright, who will make his fourth appearance with the Knights.

Tickets for Friday night and all remaining Tides home games in 2021 can be purchased online at NorfolkTides.com or at the Harbor Park box office.
