Good things came in threes for the Tides on Wednesday night at Harbor Park.

Third baseman Mason McCoy had three RBIs and two hits, including his league-leading third triple of the year, Seth Mejias-Brean added three RBIs of his own and the Tides (6-14) stormed past the Charlotte Knights by a 9-2 score, winning their third straight game.

As was the case in Tuesday’s game, Charlotte jumped out to a quick lead. An RBI single in the top of the first scored center fielder Adam Engel and put Norfolk down 1-0. The Tides answered back in the bottom half of the frame on a long home run from first baseman Tyler Nevin, his team-leading fifth of the year.

The Knights briefly regained the lead in the fourth inning, when a pair of hits off Tides starter Zac Lowther gave Charlotte its second run of the evening. Lowther was able to avoid any further damage, escaping the inning having allowed just the one run.

McCoy and the Tides responded in a familiar way in the bottom of the fourth. With two runners on, McCoy slapped a ground ball down the first base line for a three-bagger, giving the team a 3-2 lead and granting him sole possession of first place atop the Triple-A East triples leaderboard. It was Norfolk’s ninth triple of the year, the highest total in all of Triple-A.

The Tides continued to pad their lead in the later innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Mejias-Brean launched a two-run homer to make it a 5-2 game. Norfolk batted around in the sixth, highlighted by another RBI hit by McCoy, to break the game open and take a 9-2 lead.

Lowther (4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K) looked sharp in his second start at Harbor Park. He threw 52 of his 84 pitches for strikes and left the game one out shy of qualifying for his first Triple-A win. Relievers Manny Barreda, Hunter Harvey and Mickey Jannis combined to toss 4.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, yielding just four hits.

All nine players in Norfolk’s lineup reached base, with the team notching a total of nine hits and eight walks.

The Tides and Knights (7-13) will play game three of their six-game series on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
